Impact of Organic Farming Practices on Soil Health and Crop Yield in Small Landholdings of Western Uttar Pradesh

Abstract
Long-term chemical fertilizer application has led to soil organic carbon depletion and declining micro-nutrient availability in the intensive agricultural belt of Western Uttar Pradesh. This study assesses the comparative impact of organic farming practices (vermicompost, green manuring, and bio-fertilizers) versus conventional chemical farming on soil health parameters and crop yield over three cropping cycles among 120 smallholder farmers in Muzaffarnagar and Meerut districts. Results show significant improvements in soil organic carbon (SOC), microbial biomass nitrogen, and water retention capacity in organic plots.
